Professional Development, Career & Employment Resources

Professional Development for Adjuncts

As an educational professional and a part-time employee, you may be looking for professional development opportunities, additional part-time employment at CCP, or advice and information about full-time employment at CCP. Below are resources to help you advance in your professional career.

Resources from the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL)

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL), of which the Adjunct Support Center (ASC) is a part, is a place where you can do work, print, have a cup of tea, meet new colleagues, or attend a workshop.

For more information about how the FCTL and the ASC can support adjuncts, view this interview with fomer FCTL Facilitator (2016-2019) Brian Goedde:

Apply for the FCTL Faculty Fellowship Program

The FCTL's Faculty Fellowship Program provides support for faculty members in their practice of and research on high impact teaching and learning practices. For this work, each fellowship recipient earns a stipend for three credits of extended time, which is equivalent to the pay for teaching a three-credit class.

Note that the workload of part-time adjunct faculty members at CCP must be less than nine credits, so depending on your teaching assignments you might not be eligible for a fellowship.

Apply for a FCTL Faculty Development Award

Adjunct faculty who participate in professional development projects during the academic year (e.g. conferences, workshops, and seminars) are eligible to apply a stipend of $500 to cover related expenses. More information about the FCTL Faculty Development Award is available on the FCTL's website.

Nominate yourself or a colleague for a FCTL teaching award

In 2019, an award was created for the purpose of recognizing adjunct faculty members' teaching excellence. For more information, visit this page: Teaching Excellence Award for Adjunct Faculty.

Resources from the Office of Professional Development

All members of CCP's faculty are invited to take advantage of workshops and resources provided by the Office of Professional Development. If the kind of professional development you need isn't currently offered at CCP, use this form to suggest a new professional development opportunity

Attend Professional Development Week

Just prior to the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters are four- and three-day event periods known as “Fall PD” and "Spring PD.” During these periods, the Office of Professional Development offers a series of workshops, seminars, and meetings covering a variety of topics, many of which are specifically intended for faculty. As an adjunct faculty member, you are welcome to attend either Fall PD, Spring PD, or both.

Other Resources from the Office of Professional Development

New events and workshops are added to the professional development calendar throughout the fall and spring semesters and over the summer sessions. Check your CCP email and visit the Office of Professional Development's website frequently to stay up to date on available opportunities.

The Office of Professional Development maintains a list of professional development resources for part-time faculty, as well as a Professional Development Library and a list of professional development resources for all faculty.

Magna Webinars Banner

One popular resource is the series of 20-minute webinars offered by MAGNA. These webinars deal with current teaching topics, and you can watch them via Magna Commons and Mentor Commons.

Resources from the Department of Human Resources

The Human Resources Department offers professional development opportunities not specifically related to teaching.

Resources you can access independently

Stay in touch with your department

Check with your department chair to see if there are any training/development opportunities within your own department. Many departments offer teaching circles, peer mentoring, and class observation.

Stay abreast of developments in your academic field

Attending local or regional conferences, meeting with same-department peers from CCP and other colleges, and/or reading academic journals can help you stay current and provide the inspiration necessary for you to keep your courses “evergreen” at a reasonable cost. As a member of the faculty, you have access to the many databases and journals to which the College subscribes. Log onto MyCCP and then go to “Academic Resources” and click on the “Library” link.

Note that travel funding for attending conferences is available to adjunct faculty via the union

Learn about issues affecting community colleges

Working as a part-time faculty member at Community College of Philadelphia means that you are part of an important segment in the U.S. system of public higher education. As such, you should acquaint yourself with some of the issues, policies, and topical debates that impact Community Colleges, their employees, and students. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) website provides accessible and fairly comprehensive information including industry news, “hot issues,” and statements regarding policy advocacy.

Diversity Initiatives for Faculty and Staff

The College offers a variety of opportunities for faculty and staff to grow professionally in areas related to diversity

Earn a Diversity Certificate

The Diversity Certificate Program provides powerful training and guided roundtable dialogues across a range of diversity issues. There are three levels of certification: bronze (4 events), silver (8 events), and gold (12 events plus diversity project and capstone interview).

Apply to the Diversity Fellowship Program

The Diversity Fellowship Program provides an opportunity ror individuals from groups historically underrepresented in higher education to gain valuable teaching experience, to benefit from intentional mentorship, and to raise their profile at the College, with the objective of increasing diversity among the faculty across all academic departments at the College.

For more information about the Diversity Fellowships, view an interview with Diversity Fellowship Program coordinator Debonair Oates-Primus:

Hiring Advice

  • Read advice from CCP Professor Brian Goedde, “Job Market Diaries: An English Instructor,” in the Higher in the Chronicle of Higher Ed blog.
  • Attending department meetings and joining committees are great ways to meet colleagues and get to know your department.
  • Attend College events, programs and professional development trainings to get more connected to CCP.

Attend a CV and Resume Clinic

One-on-one short advising sessions throughout the semester for faculty on the job market. Sessions provide constructive advice and feedback on your curriculum vitae provided by volunteer advisors from full and part-time faculty. Sign up at the FCTL or by emailing asc@ccp.edu. Bring hard copies of your CV and questions about job application and interview processes.

Substitution/Collegial Coverage

Sub-ing for colleagues in your department is a great way to connect with colleagues while earning money at the same time. Adjuncts are paid starting at $90/hour for collegial coverage/substitute teaching (the hourly rate increases with seniority pool). Collegial coverage is when a faculty member needs someone to cover part or all of her course, whether due to sickness, conference, religion, personal reasons, etc. If you haven't been receiving the emails with the subject heading "Collegial Coverage" or "Coverage Request", email your departmental head. These substitution opportunities are first-come, first-served (quickest response per email request), and you'll know if you're chosen if the departmental head emails you back.

Part-Time Tutoring in the Learning Lab

You may wish to apply to CCP's Learning Lab Department. In the Lab, you tutor students individually or in study groups. The pay is about $43/hour, and you can work up to 24 hours/week if you're not teaching or up to nine hours/week if you're teaching two classes. Learning Lab comes with paid sick time and paid holidays if you're scheduled to work on those days.

If you're interested, email the head of the Learning Lab Department your CV and a cover letter. Learning Lab interviews and new employee schedules for fall usually happen near the beginning of the semester.

Part-Time Academic Advising in the Advising Office

The Academic Advising offices at each campus hire part-time advisors for shifts that vary from 3-8 hours. Before each semester, advisors submit their availability, and hours are assigned based on seniority and availability.

If you are interested in joining the advising team, email or stop by the Advising Office to meet:

Department Head, Academic Advising
Phone: 267-414-2072 | Bonnell Building (BG-12L)

Developmental Reading/Writing English Workshops

There are five-week Developmental English reading or writing workshops that happen throughout the year, have a set curriculum, and pay $40/hour x 30 classroom hours (two hours x three days per week) = $1,200 per five-week workshop. One great thing about these workshops is that they don't affect your total adjunct work hours, so you can teach as many of them as you want in addition to whatever other work you do at CCP. You can work either in the English Department or Learning Lab Department to be eligible to teach these workshops.

If you're interested, send your CV and a brief cover letter indicating your interest in teaching the workshops to:

Director, Academic Connections
