Additional opportunities for professional development exist throughout the College, including the following:

Information Technology Services

For help with the Outlook Web Application (email): Call x6000 for the Help desk or x6108 to arrange for training.

Human Resources

New Employee Orientation: Open to new full-time employees, a half day orientation is offered once per month. Contact HR for details and dates.

Teambuilding for Work Teams: Managers and supervisors can contact the Associate Vice President of Human Resources to arrange for team development and training.

Retirement Planning: Typically offered annually during the school year. Contact HR for dates.

Wellness (stress management, work-life balance, healthy lifestyles, etc): Look for programs offered during the year and during Fall and Spring Professional Development Weeks. Programming varies.

Supervisory Training (for Managers and Supervisors): This 9-step Management Training Program is intended for managers and supervisors, and provides both theoretical and practical knowledge concerning supervising staff in a higher education context. A variety of learning methods will be used, including small and large group discussions and activities, partner exercises, individual self-assessments, role-play and video. The emphasis is on an interactive experience for participants. Each session incorporates real-life situations in order to provide participants with an opportunity to practice what is learned in a low-risk environment (thereby facilitating the transfer of skills to the job). Participants will also develop an action plan for implementing the skills when they return to work.

Safety & Security

Safety Training: Training is typically offered during Fall and Spring PD. Learn what to do in an emergency. Contact the director of safety and security x8188

Academic Computing and Online Learning

Canvas Training (for faculty): Canvas is the College's Learning Management system used for online courses and as a supplement to in-person courses. All faculty should be using Canvas. Training is offered during Professional Development Week and throughout the year. Contact the Division of Online Learning and Media Services.

SMART Board Training: Learn to use classroom Smart boards. Look for seminars on the Academic Computing calendar. Seminars on SMART board use are sometimes offered during Fall or Spring Professional Development weeks.

Microsoft Office Suite: Academic Computing offers training and can answer questions concerning Microsoft Office Suite including MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Excel.

Diversity and Equity

Preventing Harassment in the Workplace: An online program for all employees. This program replaces in-person training required every three years. Contact the Office of Diversity and Equity to find out when you are due for training (x8038).

LGBTQ On-campus Online Training: A voluntary online training program concerning sensitivity to LGBTQ students.

Diversity Dialogues: Several of these are scheduled each semester. Each "Dialogue" covers a different topic related to Diversity.

Civility Week: Each year, the President's Council on Diversity hosts a weeklong series of seminar and events concerning civility, diversity and understanding.

Faculty Center on Teaching and Learning (FCTL) 

Programs and Seminars for Faculty: The FCTL is a faculty run center for teaching and learning. The FCTL offers teaching seminars, book clubs, mindfulness meditation programs, and other events intended to address the development and supportive needs of faculty. Many events are open to other employees as well. Some seminars are offered as part of a multi-part series. To learn more, visit the FCTL home page

Leadership Institute

Leadership Institute: A year-long program fostering the development of leaders and potential leaders. Institute attendees are admitted by selection. Learn more here.

Center on Disability

Learn Americans With Disabilities Act Requirements and Get Assistance Making Sure that Your Course is Accessible to Students with Disabilities: The Center on Disability (COD) fosters an educational environment that is inclusive of and accessible to the diverse population served by Community College of Philadelphia. It works collaboratively with College constituencies and outside agencies that support individuals with unique or complex learning needs. If you teach or interact with students, the Center on Disability can help to make sure that your course or any materials and interactions with students with disabilities is ADA compliant and inclusive.  Learn more here.

Office of Assessment and Evaluation

Assessment Training and Workshops: The Office of Assessment and Evaluation oversees several assessment functions at the College. It manages the Academic Program Review process for academic departments and curricula, and oversight of the College’s Institutional Review Board. The Office of Assessment and Evaluation can help faculty to understand acceptable practices for assessing student learning outcomes (SLOs). Learn more here.

Academic Advising

Student Advising and Student Transfer Workshops: Full time faculty at the College perform academic advising to support student success. The office of Academic Advising offers workshops focusing on the tools and resources available to faculty advisors. Academic Advising also provides training to help you assist students who wish to transfer to four year colleges and universities. Office of the General Counsel

Regulations and Policies Affecting Employees: The College's General Counsel can offer guidance regarding College policies and procedures. The General Counsel offers occasional workshops on matters of policy and legislation affecting employees. Contact the General Counsel's office at X8913

Division of Budget and Finance

Budget Management: The division of Budget and Finance offers training and individual assistance to those individuals who manage or work with department budgets. The division can help individuals understand the budget cycle and budget processes, including the use of Banner to generate reports and perform queries.
