The Key to Online Teaching: Humanizing the Technology

At the Community College of Philadelphia, we are committed to enriching teaching and learning through the thoughtful use of technology. Whether your course is delivered online, hybrid, or in person, you have access to a wide range of tools—primarily through the Canvas learning management system—to support instruction, communication, and student engagement.

The Office of Online Learning & Academic Technology provides comprehensive training to help you integrate these tools with confidence and ease. Support is available in multiple formats, including virtual sessions, phone consultations, in-person meetings, and email.

Beyond the Tools: Teaching with Purpose and Care

While technical training is essential, just as important are the human elements you bring to your teaching—the ability to connect with students and foster a supportive, inclusive learning environment. Here are a few guiding principles to consider:

Design Your Course Thoughtfully

Think about what typically happens in your classroom: lectures, discussions, assignments, assessments. Now consider how each of these can be effectively adapted for the online environment.

  • Would digital submissions via Canvas be more efficient than collecting paper assignments?
  • Could sharing a video online save time and offer more flexibility than showing it during class?

Make a list of the activities you’d like to move online—we’re here to help you bring those ideas to life in your online or hybrid classroom.

Communicate Effectively

In an online setting, transparent and regular communication is key—especially since some students (and instructors) may still be adjusting to digital tools.

Canvas and Zoom offer a variety of features to help you stay connected and ensure your students know you’re present and engaged.

Whether you’re sending announcements, hosting virtual office hours, or providing feedback, communication should be intentional and ongoing.

We’re here to guide you in using these tools to foster a strong, connected learning environment.

Lead with Compassion

No matter the teaching format, human connection remains central to student success. While some students may face more challenges than others, your compassion can make a meaningful difference. Your support and encouragement can help students feel seen, valued, and motivated. A message of understanding or flexibility can go a long way toward building trust and a sense of belonging.

You don’t need to have all the answers—just a willingness to connect. And you’re not alone in this work. The Office of Online Learning is here to support you every step of the way as we continue to build a more inclusive and sustainable learning experience for all.
