Community College of Philadelphia and the Parx Women's Leadership Academy hosted a Women's Leadership Conference at the College on March 22. Designed with the College's students in mind, the Power and Persistence conference featured engaging speakers and sessions focusing on personal, social, political, educational, professional and financial empowerment.
Students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society on Wednesday, March 13. Phi Theta Kappa is the world's largest and most prestigious honor society for students at two-year colleges.
The College kicked off it's Women's History Month activities with Fireside Chat on March 12. Students, faculty and staff joined Dr. Generals in a conversation recognizing great women and women's history.
Presented by the Fox Rothschild Center for Law and Society, the 20th Anniversary of Law and Society Week was held Feb. 25 - March 1, 2019. The week opened with a luncheon featuring keynote speaker Wilson Goode, Sr. Panels, presentations and discussions on the most current topics in the legal, criminal justice and related fields included a Social Science/Justice Career Fair, a Victim Services Panel, a Mock Oral Argument of the Madison v. Alabama case and more.
The Judge Edward R. Becker Citizenship Award Presentation and Lecture was held February 26, 2019. Mayor Kenney and Dr. Hite joined Daniel P. McElhatton, Esq., the Becker family and the College in honoring Joseph M. Field, the recipient of this year's award, whose decades-long support and contributions to the arts, health care and the welfare of children have made a profound impact on the region, its citizens and the cultural vibrancy of the city. The new Chemistry and Biology Labs took center stage on Feb. 7 during a panel discucssion and tour. The morning began with a panel discussion featuring leaders in the health care field, including, Dr. William Wunner, Professor, Director of Academic Affairs, and Outreach Education and Technology Training, The Wistar Institute; Dr. John Lee, Associate Director, CAR-T Discovery and Platform Development, Jannsen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson; Dr.
CareerLink opened its new Job Resource Hub at the Northeast Regional Center on Feb. 8. H. Patrick Clancy, the president and CEO of Philadelphia Works, and Daniel Rivera, the site administrator for the Job Resource Hub, joined members of the College community at the ribbon cutting ceremony. The hub will offer specific services to meet the needs of job-seeking residents while also providing recruiting assistance for employers.
Dr. Generals kicked off the first Fireside Chat of the year in recognition of African American History Month. He read excerpts from The Cross of Redemption, by James Baldwin, and Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Students and staff followed with a conversation about current challenges and solutions.
Spring 2019 Professional Development Week was held Jan. 7-11. A major focus of the week was poverty in Philadelphia, its impact on the city and College, and ideas for dealing with this important issue. Other activities included a luncheon with entertainment by artists from our new record label, Spring Garden Records; four designated Diversity Certificate sessions, Assessment Tuesday, and Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse: Mandated and Permissive Reporting in Pennsylvania training offered on Wednesday and Thursday.
