Incorporating Community-Engaged Learning

Community-engaged learning enriches academic coursework by connecting classroom instruction with meaningful community service. Our Adopt-A-School partners, which are located in neighborhoods across the city, are ideal sites for community-engaged learning across diverse academic disciplines. The Institute for Community Engagement and Civic Leadership (the Institute) works with faculty and staff at the College to design thoughtful projects that both achieve course learning objectives and center community voice to ensure results are mutually beneficial.

If you’re interested in exploring community-engaged learning, whether you’re in the idea phase or have a project already developed, please contact the Institute team at institute@ccp.edu.

Supporting Donation Drives

Each year, the Institute coordinates donation drives to benefit Adopt-A-School school partners. We are always looking for additional support through donating or promoting the drive to students and colleagues. We encourage you to consider supporting the following donation drives:

  • Adopt-A-Family Holiday Drive (November/December) – Donations of non-perishable food and holiday gifts for school partners’ most in-need families
  • Personal Care Items Drive (April/May) – Donations of personal hygiene items such as deodorant, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, etc.

Promoting the Program

The Adopt-A-School Program runs from September through June and provides CCP students with real-world experience and part-time employment (students must be awarded Federal Work-Study). Students volunteer their time as a K-12 tutor and classroom assistant where they support students in English, math, and science at one of our partner schools in the School District of Philadelphia. Faculty and staff are encouraged to share this opportunity with their students to help expand the program’s reach and ensure more students benefit from this meaningful, hands-on learning experience.
