Adopt-A-School

The College has adopted Spring Garden School, a local public K-8 school located on 1146 Melon Street, and will provide year-round services to the entire school community. In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia’s Office of Strategic Partnerships, the College is creating an abundance of volunteer and service-learning opportunities for all members of the College community. Opportunities will range from beautification days, parent engagement, college and career readiness to in-kind donations and more!

Spring Garden School Field Day

Junior Achievement

JA Step to Success (JASTS) develops a foundation of college aspiration among 3rd grade students in the School District of Philadelphia.

JASTS volunteers guide students on a visit through a local campus to gain a better understanding of student life. Volunteers are provided with a guide to assist students in visualizing themselves on campus and beginning to understand key college terms. Ideal volunteers would be current students or alumni who are interested in inspiring students to believe in themselves, and showing them that college is a reality. Background clearances and training are required.

The Free Library of Philadelphia

The Free Library of Philadelphia's Read by 4th Campaign is excited to pilot a Sunday Literacy Program at select libraries. This program is intended to offer additional help to students struggling to read in 1st through 3rd grades. Volunteer with students, play literacy games and support young children learning to read. Background clearances and training are required.

PowerCorpsPHL

PowerCorpsPHL engages adults, ages 18 to 26, in transforming their lives through service. During their term of AmeriCorps service, corps members work with partner City departments to tackle pressing environmental challenges, including the need for improved storm water management, increased tree coverage, and revitalized public land. Upon completion of their service, alumni receive intensive transition support designed to enhance their chances for success in career-track employment, post-secondary education, and/or additional national service.

Responsibilities

Our AmeriCorps Administrative Coordinator role will provide critical support to the PowerCorpsPHL leadership team and will be expected to:

  • Manage transpass systems for members
  • Support with training day logistics including, agenda creation, panel coordination/facilitation, space reservations, meal management, workshop supply coordination and distribution
  • Assist the Assistant Director of Data and Compliance with management of social media, marketing/communications & recruitment processes
  • Act as the liaison between Admin systems at EducationWorks and PowerCorpsPHL staff
  • Benefits: $484 every two weeks, and education award of $1527.45

The Community Farm at Bartram's Garden

The Farm is a youth powered, community-based, food sovereignty and Food Resource Center located at Bartram’s Garden in Southwest Philadelphia. The Farm works to support urban agriculture in Philadelphia through facilitating an exchange of resources and farming/cooking education as tools for community self-reliance.

During the summer, Farm Crew Leaders (FCLs) will work alongside a group of 20 high school students through a 6 week summer program including a 1-week orientation, 1 week of final presentations of learning, and 4 weeks of rotations:

  • Work on the farm
  • Sell produce at the local farmers’ market
  • Teach nutrition through cooking and community outreach
  • Benefits: If you qualify for work study your pay will be $10 an hour

The Bloomberg Arts Mentors program

The Bloomberg Arts Mentors program is a paid summer internship for undergraduate college students with an interest in the arts and working with teens. This is an excellent opportunity for students who would like to gain experience combining arts, arts administration, education, and teaching. In this program, Mentors will provide guidance and oversight to high school students who are placed in internships in cultural organizations around the city.

Responsibilities:

  • Serving as a mentor to high school students participating in the Bloomberg Arts & Culture Program.
  • Incorporate visual, literary, and performing arts into lesson plans and ice breakers.
  • Facilitate high school intern orientation.
  • Oversee and facilitate weekly site visits to cultural institutions.
  • Create and facilitate weekly professional development training workshops.
  • Communicate with interns regarding work assignments, schedules, and responsibilities.
  • Oversee intern multi-media projects, weekly blog, and social media postings.
  • Photo-documentation of program at weekly class sessions as well as at all work sites; compile report at end of program with highlight photos from every work site and class sessions.
  • Collect and process weekly time sheets for high school interns.
  • Benefits: Mentors will work part time (approximately 25-30 hours per week) starting June 20, 2017 and will be paid $12.50/hour for their work, including training.
  • Deadline for applications is Friday, May 5, 2017.
