Investigating Current Research and Best Practices in Second Language Acquisition

While foreign language instruction has historically tended to focus on production (i.e. speaking and writing), a growing body of research in the field of second language acquisition underscores the importance of comprehension. Bill Van Patten’s book, While We Are on the Topic, is an example of this scholarship. The growing body of research unequivocally supports approaches that fall under the parameter of comprehensible input (CI). Rather than aiming at the production of grammatically accurate speech and text, CI emphasizes the internalization of the target language by listening to and reading examples of the target language that are entirely comprehensible to the learners. We propose to meet throughout the year to learn about CI approaches by discussing the work of Van Patten and other teachers and researchers, and to discuss the practicalities of implementing it in the community college setting.
