Lindback Lecture, “Our Commitment to Responsible Citizenship,” with 2017 Lindback Award Recipient, Professor Osvil Acosta-Moracles

Today there is broad agreement that every institution of higher education ought to have the development of responsible citizenship as one its primary goals. However, it is not always clear what that means, and just beneath the surface of our almost universal agreement about the importance of responsible citizenship we sometimes find confusion or controversy when questions are raised about the specific ways that colleges and universities ought to promote responsible citizenship in their students. Especially with a campus environment that is both global and diverse in its concerns and its community, we would be wise to keep a watchful eye on the important and slippery distinction between education and indoctrination, as well as the unavoidable challenges involved in trying to be both champions for freedom and opponents of hate.
