Learning Goals

  • Understand the definitions of Essential Skills.
  • Establish how the Essential Skills help students achieve their academic and career goals
  • Determine how we assess our/students’ progress in learning the skills.
  • Demonstrate how we teach and assess Essential Skills in general education courses.
  • Demonstrate how we build on, develop, and assess Essential skills in program courses.

Program Description

During the past two years or so, the Cross Divisional Curriculum Planning (CDCP) group along with the General Education Task Force (GETF) have been working on revising general education, which includes drafting and finalizing the General Education Essential Skills. Part of this has been in response to Middle States’ proposal that that colleges examine General Education based on Essential Skills rather than disciplines. As a culmination of this effort, the six General Education Essential Skills will form the basis of our revised general education curriculum effective Fall 2021. In this series of interactive faculty led workshops, faculty will gain an understanding of the new and improved general education guidelines called Essential Skills. Faculty attending these workshops will become familiar with the six Essential Skills and how to intertwine the skills throughout their courses. In the workshops, faculty across disciplines will demonstrate projects, assessments and activities that highlight the embedded essential skills within their courses, CLOs and PLOs; demonstrate how students may connect essential skills with their lived experiences and how to apply the primary content of the course to work and life using the essential skills.
