Learning Goals
After this session, participants will:

  1. Have a fuller understanding of the complex processes underlying second language acquisition
  2. Gain insight into their own assumptions about language
  3. Develop a heightened sense of awareness of their language use, particularly with non-native English speakers; and
  4. Come out of the session with some practical tips on how to communicate with our non-native English speakers in a way that empowers the students

Program Description:
This session proposes to introduce the many different languages that our students at CCP speak, and provide the audience with a taste of fascinating linguistic features so different from the English language. The session would be organized as follows:

  1. Have the audience play a language game, where they have to guess what language is presented to them
  2. Present a list of the languages that our students speak
  3. Focus on the lesser known languages and introduce linguistic features that English does not carry (and in the process, learn a few new words in different languages!)
  4. Come out of the session with a deeper sense of what our students experience in their very different linguistic environment at CCP/in Philadelphia
